Make it your servant, not tyrant
Most people say certain things are important to them:
Health.
Relationships.
Learning.
Building something meaningful.
But when you look at how they actually spend their time, those priorities are nowhere to be found?
There is an old saying:
Show me your calendar and I will tell you your future.
And I believe it to be true – what does not get scheduled often does not get done.
That is why we need a calendar.
Not as a tyrant. Not as a prison.
But as a guide.
Something that helps us make sure the things we claim are important actually have a place in our lives.
Everybody Gets the Same 24 Hours
No matter who you are, you get the same twenty-four hours each day.
The challenge is fitting everything important into them and still remain sane. Still find time for yourself.
One approach I like is working in time blocks. Not tasks.
For example, dividing the 24-hour day into eight blocks of three hours.
It is simple, flexible and it leaves enough room for real life to happen.
Not every minute needs to be optimized.
The goal is structure, not perfection.
The goal is structure, that you can stick with long term, not get overwhelmed after two weeks.
You should love your calendar after all.
Start With the Non-Negotiables
The first step is scheduling things that cannot be avoided:
Sleep.
Work.
Taking care of yourself.
For me, that usually looks like:
8 hours of sleep, so if we add 30 min morning and evening routine, 9 hours, therefore three blocks are gone.
8 hours of work, so with commuting, another three blocks are gone as well.
One block for health. Dedicate three hours each day to:
Training.
Meal preparation.
Recovery.
Or just hiking…
Whatever helps keep your body working properly.
At that point, seven out of eight blocks are already allocated.
And that leaves you exactly with one block left – the most important block you ever get.
The Decision Block
This is the block that matters most.
Not because it is bigger.
Not because it is more important than health or work.
But because it is the block you control.
You can use it to learn.
Build a business.
Spend time with family.
Read.
Work on a project.
Develop a skill.
… or waste it completely.
The choice is yours.
This block is where your future gets built.
One day at a time.
The Purpose of Structure
Many people avoid schedules because they feel restricted by them.
I understand that.
So what about…
What about creating schedule that you actually like, rather than hate?
Good schedule should not feel like a prison.
It should feel like freedom.
When you know what matters and when you are going to do it, you stop negotiating with yourself all day long.
You stop wondering:
“What should I be doing right now?”
Your calendar already answered that question.
Action Step
Take a look at the Calendar template, or get it from the Resources section.
You can visually see that, it covers everything important in life and still leaves lots of time for personal use.
Or simply create your own version.
Start by scheduling the non-negotiables.
Then identify your decision block.
Your future is built from how you spend your time today.
